Lovely article. I suspect you also made his day, too. Conventions are such weird events, all human life is there. But I often enjoy the simple fact that people are meeting their absolute HEROES. It’s heady stuff.

Thank you! I really recommend Enniskillen, it has a lovely atmosphere and the organisers go out of their way to make guests, exhibitors and visitors feel welcome. It even had really good food trucks! I have never complimented the food at a con before. Actually, Edinburgh Comics Art Fair has a nice wee cafe too.

Another comics giant -- and one of my faves. I've not met him, but I did interview him for BACK ISSUE magazine many years ago. His work on Marvelman and Captain Britain were real eye-openers for young me back in the early-80s, and I followed his career when he went to DC (Batman & the Outsiders) and then Marvel, for his magnificent Excalibur runs and so much else. Recently reread his JLA: Nail series, and they're so great!

He was a genuinely nice person, funny and a bit mischievous. He did terrible Oor Wullie patter when he heard my accent, which made laugh. It was a very surreal experience, he signed my comic, we spoke for a while and I asked him I could get a sketch of Captain Britain. Then said, 'Yes, but sit round here, I like talking with you'. I need to get hold of that Back Issue, as I've not read that interview!

It was part of an overview of the Marvelman story, so it's not any great long interview by any means; just a few comments and insights into what was going on behind the scenes at Warrior, etc., as part of the bigger picture.

What issue was that in, Allan? My favourite series from Warrior was V for Vendetta. That's my favourite Moore-written comic. There's still quite a few comics of his that I haven't read, mind you. His '90s period mostly passed me by, but I picking up Top Ten, Tom Strong and Tomorrow Stories to get complete runs.

Let me know your address and I'll send you the magazine, I've probably got a few sitting around here somewhere.

Horses for courses, I prefer Marvelman to V for Vendetta, but I love both. Moore's Swamp Thing was absolutely incredible, and quite possibly the reason why I still love comics. The ABC stuff is great too, and I'm one of the few that really liked Promethea! For the Silver Age fan in all of us (ahem) there's also his Supreme stuff, which is a love letter to the era.

Thanks very kind of you! I'll DM you in the Slack group and sort out postage. Let's be honest, Alan Moore is a pretty good comics writer. I can see why you dig Marvel Man, but V for Vendetta just seemed to perfectly extrapolate the zeitgeist when I first read it as a teenager. Watchmen is quite good too and I believe that might be one of his popular comics.

Very cultured article, Jonny. I’m interested to hear how you shit on your comic, not because I’m a weirdo, but because how does one accidentally shit on a comic? I’m assuming it was an accident.

It the result of diarrhoea at seven years old, sadly. I got into the bad habit of reading on the can as a kid. I remember running around my bedroom trying to find the comic, then racing into the bathroom, dropping my kegs and then promptly shitting right on the middle of the cover. Afterwards, I went downstairs and asked my Dad if he could clean it. At which point he threw it in the bin.

I probably shouldn't have told this story to Alan Davis, but he found it funny nonetheless. I did reassure him that it was a different copy.

I used to read comics on the toilet as a kid. I’m thinking now that my Oink and Mad magazines may have various samples present on the pages.

I've bought some back issues that I had to put straight back in the bag as they smelled so bad.
